GEO vs AEO vs SEO: What Each Term Actually Means
Three acronyms, heavily overlapping practices, and a lot of vendor noise. What GEO, AEO, and SEO each actually mean, and what genuinely differs in the work.
SEO optimizes for ranked links. AEO optimizes for direct-answer features like featured snippets. GEO optimizes for being cited inside AI-generated answers. The three overlap heavily, roughly eighty percent of the work is identical, and most of the difference that vendors sell as distinct disciplines is the same content and structure work aimed at different surfaces.
The three terms, precisely
| Term | Targets | Success looks like |
|---|---|---|
| SEO Search engine optimization | Ranked blue-link results and Map Pack positions | Position 1-3 for a query, clicks to your site |
| AEO Answer engine optimization | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice answers | Your text read aloud or shown above results |
| GEO Generative engine optimization | AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini answers | Your business named or your content cited in the answer |
What is genuinely the same across all three
Every one of these surfaces rewards the same fundamentals: content that answers the actual question rather than circling it, factual accuracy that holds up to checking, topical depth that demonstrates you cover a subject rather than one keyword, clean technical structure, and entity consistency so systems know who you are and where you operate. For a local business, that last point means your Google Business Profile, reviews, and citations do heavy lifting for all three, since AI answers about local services draw on the same underlying data as the Map Pack.
What actually differs
Extraction independence. Traditional SEO can afford a paragraph that only makes sense after reading the previous three. Answer and generative surfaces lift passages out of context, so each section needs to stand alone and remain accurate when quoted in isolation.
Answer position. Burying the answer below eight hundred words of preamble is survivable in classic SEO if the page is otherwise strong. It is fatal for snippet and AI extraction, where the first forty to sixty words after a heading are what gets pulled.
Attribution economics. A featured snippet still shows your domain. An AI answer may satisfy the user completely without a click, which means GEO success sometimes looks like brand mention rather than traffic, a genuinely different measurement problem that the industry has not solved yet.
What to actually do
Lead every page and section with the direct answer, then expand. Use question-shaped headings that match how people actually ask. Keep facts verifiable and cite real sources, because AI systems weight accuracy heavily and hallucinated statistics get a page dropped from consideration. Add FAQ and article schema so machines can parse structure unambiguously. Build genuine topical clusters rather than isolated posts, since coverage of a subject is what establishes you as a source worth quoting. And keep your entity data, name, address, services, reviews, consistent everywhere it appears.
None of that conflicts with classic SEO. If your provider's GEO proposal contains anything that would look wrong in an SEO audit, that is the tell.
The honest limitation
No one can guarantee citation in AI Overviews or by any assistant. Those systems select sources with undisclosed criteria that change without notice, and anyone selling guaranteed AI visibility is selling something they cannot control. What is defensible is building content comprehensive, accurate, and well-structured enough to be selected, which is the same bet that has always paid in search. Our local SEO service folds this work into the existing scope rather than invoicing it as a separate product, for the reason this article explains: it is largely the same work.
